The Shape of Jazz
OCT 2025
Book as Archive
Editorial / Photography

3.1
The Shape of Jazz is a visual book that explores jazz through archival imagery and historical narrative. Drawing from old image archives, the project traces the development of jazz as both a musical form and a cultural movement. Through photography and graphic design, the book connects sound, history, and visual memory, treating jazz as an evolving language shaped by time, place, and people.

The project introduces key moments in jazz history alongside iconic performers, using image sequencing and layout to build rhythm and context. Archival photographs function not only as documentation but as emotional entry points that capture performance, atmosphere, and presence. Typography and composition guide the reader through historical layers, allowing information and imagery to coexist with clarity and flow.

At its core, The Shape of Jazz positions the book as both an archive and an interpretation. By recontextualizing historical images and narratives through contemporary design, the project reflects on how jazz continues to influence visual culture and collective memory. The book preserves the spirit of jazz while translating its history into a tactile visual experience.
